England's dodgy starts

England are starting to make something of a habit of slow starts on tour. Enjoyable though the headline "Undercooked, under Cook" would be, the pattern was actually set on Andrew Strauss's first tour as captain - West Indies 2009. England managed 318 in their first innings and lost the Test. They then went on to score 566/9 in the first innings of the next completed Test (2nd Test abandoned).

This pattern of scoring significantly higher totals in the first innings of the second Test than in the first has been repeated in every tour since, with the exception of Bangladesh, as the chart below demonstrates.

In the 7 series against major Test playing nations since 2009 (excluding Bangladesh), England have averaged just 240 in the first innings of the first Test, and over double that (489) in the first innings of the second Test. They went on to lose 4 and draw 3 of their opening Tests, and have won 4 of the 6 completed second Tests to date (one loss, one draw). Google Visualization API Sample
